Content Readability Checker: How to Use the Scores
What each readability formula actually measures, what "good" looks like for SEO content, and how to use the results to fix real sentences — not just chase a number.
Why Readability Affects SEO, Not Just Style
Google's own guidance and its Search Quality Rater Guidelines emphasize content that satisfies user intent efficiently — and content that's needlessly hard to parse fails that test even when the information is accurate. Readability isn't a direct ranking factor the way a title tag or a backlink is, but it's a strong proxy for the things that are: time on page, scroll depth, bounce rate, and whether a featured-snippet or AI Overview algorithm can cleanly extract an answer from your paragraph. Dense, jargon-heavy writing also tends to correlate with thin E-E-A-T signals, because writers hiding behind complexity often haven't actually simplified their own understanding of the topic.
The five scores in this tool come from decades-old, well-documented readability research — Rudolf Flesch's original formula dates to 1948, and Gunning Fog, SMOG, and Coleman-Liau followed over the next few decades. They were built for print and classroom text, but they remain the closest thing content writers have to an objective, repeatable readability check, and every major SEO content tool (Yoast, Semrush's Writing Assistant, Koala) still uses some blend of them today.
What Each Score Measures
Flesch Reading Ease runs 0-100, with higher scores meaning easier text. It weighs average sentence length and average syllables per word. A score of 60-70 corresponds to plain, conversational English understandable by a 13-15 year old — a reasonable target for most blog posts, product pages, and help docs. Below 30 is roughly academic-journal territory; above 90 reads like a children's book.
Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level converts the same inputs into a US school grade level. A score of 8 means an eighth grader should be able to read it on one pass. Most style guides for general web writing (including the US government's plain-language guidelines) recommend targeting grade 7-9.
Gunning Fog Index also estimates years of education needed, but leans harder on "complex words" — anything with three or more syllables. It tends to run a point or two higher than Flesch-Kincaid on technical writing, because technical vocabulary (optimization, infrastructure, authentication) racks up complex-word count fast even in otherwise clear sentences.
SMOG Index (Simple Measure of Gobbledygook) was designed specifically for shorter passages and focuses almost entirely on complex-word density. It's most statistically reliable on passages of 30+ sentences — on shorter text, treat it as a rough directional signal rather than a precise score, which is exactly what this tool's help panel flags.
Coleman-Liau Index is the outlier: instead of counting syllables, it uses letters-per-word and sentences-per-hundred-words. Because syllable-counting heuristics (including the one this tool uses) can misjudge unusual words, Coleman-Liau often gives a useful second opinion when the syllable-based scores disagree with each other.
An Honest Note on Accuracy
All five formulas depend on automated syllable counting, and no regex-based syllable counter is perfect — proper nouns, acronyms, hyphenated compounds, and borrowed words can all throw off a word or two of the count on longer text. That's normal, not a bug specific to this tool; the same limitation applies to every readability checker built this way, including the ones inside well-known paid SEO suites. Treat the numbers as a strong directional signal for editing priorities, not a certified precision score, and always do a final human read-through before publishing.
How to Use This Tool
Paste at least 100-300 words of your draft — readability formulas get noisy on very short text, which is why the tool asks for a 30-word minimum and the SMOG panel calls out its own reliability caveat. Optionally add your target keyword or phrase to get a density read alongside the readability scores; this tool checks how often it appears, whether it shows up in your first 100 words, and flags density above roughly 3% as a stuffing risk.
Click Analyze content and work top to bottom: check the overall reading-level badge first, then open the sentences to simplify list — every sentence over 25 words is listed with its word count, longest first. These are usually the fastest wins: split a 40-word sentence into two shorter ones and watch Flesch-Kincaid drop by a point or more. The passive-voice count at the bottom is a rough heuristic (looking for "is/was/were" near a past-participle-shaped word within a few tokens), so use it as a prompt to scan those sentences yourself rather than a precise count.
Practical Targets by Content Type
For a general consumer blog post or landing page, aim for Flesch Reading Ease 60+ and a Flesch-Kincaid grade of 7-9. For a technical B2B or developer-facing article, grade 9-12 is often acceptable — forcing genuinely technical content down to a sixth-grade score usually means stripping out necessary precision, not improving clarity. For anything meant to rank for a featured snippet or get quoted in an AI Overview, shorter sentences help regardless of topic, since extraction systems favor self-contained, unambiguous statements over long compound sentences.
Quick Fixes for a Lower Score
Split any sentence flagged in the hard-sentences list into two. Swap a three-syllable word for a one- or two-syllable synonym where meaning doesn't suffer ("utilize" → "use", "facilitate" → "help"). Cut throat-clearing openers ("It is important to note that..."). Replace a chain of prepositional phrases with a direct subject-verb-object sentence. None of these require rewriting your argument — they're mechanical edits that consistently move all five scores in the same direction.
